Tantalum and niobium are metals that are indispensable for a wide range of new products and techniques. Besides the very high melting point of tantalum is characterized by its special properties for storing electrical energy. Tantalum is in demand

• in Medicine (Auto-defibrillators, cochlear implants, stents for angioplasty and other procedures)
• in the industry in general (cutting tools, semiconductor)

The demand for rough tantalum niobium increases steadily, while the stocks in the supply chain is currently low. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Tantalum-Niobium International Study Centre (TIC) say for the next 20 years requires a quadrupling of demand. To meet this future demand, the market will require additional significant production from new sources. Unlike other metals, tantalum is not traded as a commodity to the accepted metal markets. The tantalum market is instead on negotiated basis. This fact gives the providers a significant bargaining power, especially during a bull market of the tantalum price.
